Three Floyds

Three Floyds Brewing began in 1996 in a Hammond, Indiana, garage under the guidance of Nick Floyd (alongside brothers Simon and their father Mike) with the bold motto “It’s Not Normal.” From day one, Floyd aimed to make beers that would stand out, aggressive, full-flavored, unapologetically bold. After four years, the brewery relocated to Munster, Indiana, in 2000, laying the foundation for what would become a cult destination for beer enthusiasts.

One of the defining pillars of Three Floyds’ identity is its flagship beers, Alpha King, Zombie Dust, Gumballhead, Dreadnaught, and Dark Lord. These beers helped solidify the brewery’s reputation for high-impact hop expression, uncompromising flavor, and a willingness to push boundaries. Dark Lord, their legendary imperial stout brewed with coffee, Mexican vanilla, and Indian sugar, even commands its own annual event, Dark Lord Day, where fans journey to the brewery to secure coveted bottles. Over time, that event has grown into a pilgrimage, with thousands attending and trading beers under heavy metal music and a festive, ritual atmosphere.

Over the years, Three Floyds has expanded both its production scale and its technical capabilities. Their brewing operations now include canning lines, expanded facilities, and even oak foeders for barrel-aging and wild ales. The brewery continuously experiments, releasing limited runs, collaborations, and aging programs, while maintaining the core “not normal” attitude. Their packaging and promotional creativity have also been recognized: in 2023, they won multiple “Crushie” awards for marketing and design excellence.

As a testament to their influence, Three Floyds consistently ranks among the top breweries in user ratings and beer criticism circles. They have earned scores and respect on platforms such as Untappd (23 Untappd Community Awards: 6 golds, 10 silvers, 7 bronzes) and continue to be hailed among craft beer elites. Their fans are loyal and vocal, drawn not just to flavor but to the mythology and community built around the brand.

More than a brewer, Three Floyds has become a cultural touchstone for lovers of bold beer. Its success lies not just in technique or ingredients, but in vision: brewing fearlessly, cultivating community, and demanding that every sip deliver something surprising.
