Leopold Bros.
Leopold Bros. is one of the most influential and technically rigorous craft distilleries in the United States, revered for its uncompromising dedication to historical authenticity, ingredient integrity, and old-world production methods. Founded in 2008 in Denver, Colorado, by brothers Todd and Scott Leopold, the distillery was built around a singular belief: that truly great spirits are born from patience, transparency, and a deep respect for the traditions that shaped them.
From the beginning, Leopold Bros. set itself apart by refusing shortcuts common in modern spirits production. Rather than purchasing neutral grain spirits or using industrial methods, the Leopold brothers committed to milling, fermenting, distilling, and aging every spirit from scratch. Their approach is grounded in pre-Prohibition and European techniques, many of which had all but disappeared from contemporary distilling. This philosophy has positioned Leopold Bros. as both a producer and a steward of lost distillation knowledge.
The distillery is particularly renowned for its heritage grain whiskeys, especially its award-winning American Small Batch Whiskey and Three Chamber Rye, a historic style resurrected using a painstakingly recreated three-chamber still modeled after those used in Maryland rye distilleries in the early 1900s. This rare still, one of the only functional examples in the world, allows Leopold Bros. to produce rye whiskey with remarkable spice, fruit, and texture that simply cannot be replicated by modern column stills.
Beyond whiskey, Leopold Bros. is equally respected for its exceptional gins, absinthes, and eaux-de-vie. Their American Gin is often cited as a benchmark for the category, distilled using a traditional three-chamber pot still method that preserves delicate botanical aromatics. Their absinthe, produced with grande wormwood grown on-site, adheres strictly to 19th-century French practices and has helped redefine what authentic absinthe can be in the modern era.
Sustainability and agriculture are deeply woven into the Leopold Bros. identity. The distillery grows a significant portion of its own botanicals and grain, malts barley on-site, and works closely with local farmers to preserve heirloom varieties. Their purpose-built distillery, designed around gravity-fed processes, minimizes energy use while honoring traditional workflows. Every decision, from floor malting to barrel aging, is made with long-term stewardship in mind.
Leopold Bros. has earned widespread acclaim from critics, bartenders, and spirits scholars alike, not through hype but through quiet mastery and relentless precision. Their spirits are found behind some of the world’s best bars and in the collections of serious enthusiasts who value authenticity over novelty.
More than a distillery, Leopold Bros. is a living archive of distillation history, reviving lost methods, honoring forgotten flavors, and proving that the future of American spirits can be built by looking carefully, and respectfully, to the past.
