Select Tier

This month’s Select Tier is an invitation to look beyond the usual suspects. Across Italy, Oregon, and Georgia, these wines introduce varieties, traditions, and regional styles that may sit just outside the mainstream but deliver exactly what makes wine exploration so rewarding: personality, history, and an unmistakable sense of place.

From the dramatic alpine landscape of Trentino-Alto Adige, Colterenzio-Schreckbichl ‘Kalterersee’ Auslese Lago di Caldaro Scelto Classico Superiore showcases the light-footed charm of Schiava. Fresh, aromatic, and effortlessly drinkable, it offers an entirely different vision of northern Italian red wine, one driven by brightness and finesse rather than weight. Colterenzio-Schreckbichl ‘Pfefferer’ Moscato Giallo provides an equally distinctive white expression, pairing the variety’s exuberant floral and fruit aromatics with the freshness of Alto Adige’s mountain vineyards.

Oregon’s Bow & Arrow brings the spirit of experimentation stateside with its Time Machine Rouge and Time Machine Blanc. Both wines embrace a less conventional side of the Willamette Valley, favoring freshness, energy, and immediate pleasure over the region’s more familiar expressions. Together, they showcase how a new generation of Oregon winemakers continues to expand the conversation around what the Willamette Valley can be.

Poderi San Lazzaro ‘Polesio’ Rosso Marche IGT shifts the journey to Italy’s Adriatic side, highlighting the character of the Marche through a savory, expressive red that reflects the region’s Mediterranean landscape and deeply rooted wine culture.

Perhaps the deepest connection to history comes from Askaneli Brothers Saperavi Qvevri from Kakheti. Georgia’s ancient tradition of fermenting and aging wine in buried clay qvevri predates many of the techniques now considered fundamental to modern winemaking. Combined with the naturally intense Saperavi grape, the method produces a wine with depth, structure, and a character unlike more conventional European reds.

Together, these six bottles celebrate wine’s extraordinary diversity. Some revive ancient traditions, others reinterpret familiar regions, but each encourages us to venture a little further from what we already know and discover just how much more there is to taste.

Premium Tier

September’s Premium Tier takes that spirit of discovery one step further, focusing on four wines that challenge familiar expectations of both grape and place. Germany, Austria, and California take center stage, revealing what happens when exceptional vineyards and thoughtful producers give varieties room to express themselves in unexpected surroundings.

Weingut Dautel ‘Cleebronn’ Spätburgunder introduces a compelling side of Württemberg, a German region increasingly recognized for sophisticated expressions of Pinot Noir. Here, the grape trades sheer richness for precision, freshness, and finely detailed structure, offering a reminder that Germany’s red-wine story extends far beyond what many drinkers have traditionally encountered.

Madson Wines Gamay Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills provides another unexpected pairing of grape and geography. Better associated with Beaujolais, Gamay takes on a distinctly Californian identity in the cool, wind-influenced vineyards of the Sta. Rita Hills. Its naturally lively character makes an ideal match for the region, resulting in a red driven by energy, aromatic expression, and freshness.

Austria brings a benchmark regional pairing with Weingut Leo Alzinger ‘Dürnstein’ Grüner Veltliner Federspiel from the Wachau. The steep vineyards surrounding the Danube have long demonstrated Grüner Veltliner’s ability to transcend simple refreshment, producing wines of remarkable mineral definition, texture, and precision. Alzinger’s interpretation captures that balance beautifully, offering an expression firmly rooted in one of Austria’s great wine landscapes.

Completing the tier, Weingut Dautel ‘Bönnigheim’ Sonnenberg Chardonnay returns to Württemberg for another perspective on the region’s evolution. Chardonnay may be an international variety, but in the right hands it becomes a transparent vehicle for site. Dautel’s approach emphasizes structure, tension, and vineyard character, revealing a sophisticated side of German Chardonnay that deserves far more attention.

Together, these selections demonstrate why exploring beyond wine’s most famous regions and familiar combinations can be so rewarding. September’s Premium Tier isn't about obscurity for its own sake, it is about discovering exceptional wines in places where curiosity is rewarded, expectations are challenged, and familiar grapes can tell entirely new stories.

Private Sommelier Tier

Our Private Sommelier Tier takes September’s Beyond the Familiar theme into rarer territory, highlighting wines that reveal unexpected sides of celebrated regions. Rather than simply seeking prestigious labels, these selections reward curiosity, offering distinctive vineyard expressions, unconventional styles, and producers whose work encourages us to reconsider what we think we know about classic wine regions.

Etienne Calsac Val l’Hermite Blanc de Noirs brings that philosophy to Champagne. Produced entirely from Pinot Noir from the Val l’Hermite site in Bligny in the Côte des Bar, the wine combines the depth and vinous character of Pinot Noir with the precision expected from grower Champagne. The result is a powerful yet finely detailed expression that places vineyard identity firmly at the center of the experience.

From the Rhône Valley, Le Clos du Caillou Les Quartz Côtes du Rhône demonstrates how an exceptional site and meticulous farming can elevate a familiar appellation into something far more distinctive. It is precisely the kind of wine this month celebrates: a bottle that encourages us to look beyond classifications and reputation and instead consider the vineyard, producer, and individual character behind the label.

Marie Courtin Coteaux Champenois Le Blanc du Tremble offers perhaps the most unexpected perspective of the collection. Champagne is synonymous with bubbles, yet Coteaux Champenois provides a rare opportunity to experience the region as still wine. Dominique Moreau, the woman behind Marie Courtin, farms biodynamically in the Côte des Bar and has built her reputation around highly individual, terroir-focused wines. Le Blanc du Tremble is a still Pinot Noir expression, offering an unusually direct window into Champagne’s soils and fruit without the transformation of secondary fermentation.

Together, these selections capture what the Private Sommelier experience is designed to uncover: wines that go beyond recognizable names and regions to reveal something less expected.
