Presqu'ile Wines

Presqu’ile Winery is a benchmark producer on California’s Central Coast, celebrated for wines that marry precision, freshness, and a profound sense of place. Founded in 2007 by Matt Murphy and his family, Presqu’ile (pronounced press-keel) is located in the heart of the Santa Maria Valley AVA, a region defined by its rare east–west orientation that funnels cool Pacific Ocean breezes deep inland. This maritime influence creates one of California’s longest growing seasons, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity and nuanced aromatics.

The estate centers on Presqu’ile’s own sustainably farmed vineyard, planted primarily to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, varieties that thrive in the valley’s cool climate and sandy loam soils. Sustainability is foundational to the winery’s philosophy: Presqu’ile is certified sustainable, practices water conservation, promotes biodiversity through cover cropping and habitat preservation, and has invested heavily in renewable energy, including an extensive solar array that powers much of the operation.

In the cellar, the winemaking team is led by Winemaker Dieter Cronje, whose background in both California and South Africa brings a global perspective to Presqu’ile’s distinctly coastal wines. Dieter works with a minimalist mindset, aiming to guide rather than manipulate. Native yeast fermentations are often employed, oak usage is carefully calibrated, and extraction is restrained, all in service of transparency and balance. The goal is not to overpower the fruit, but to let vineyard character and vintage conditions take the lead.

Presqu’ile has earned particular acclaim for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as some of the most refined and age-worthy expressions in the Santa Maria Valley. These wines are known for their clarity, tension, and layered complexity, Pinots that emphasize red fruit, savory nuance, and silky structure, and Chardonnays that balance citrus and stone fruit with subtle texture and mineral drive. Syrah, another standout, reflects the cool climate with peppery aromatics, dark fruit, and elegant restraint rather than heaviness.

Beyond the wines themselves, Presqu’ile is also known for its striking modern tasting room and sweeping vineyard views, making it a destination for wine lovers exploring the Central Coast. The winery’s commitment to hospitality mirrors its approach to winemaking: thoughtful, welcoming, and rooted in respect for both people and place.

Presqu’ile Wines represents a harmonious blend of coastal terroir, sustainable farming, and disciplined craftsmanship. With each vintage, the winery continues to define what Santa Maria Valley wines can be, cool-climate expressions that are vibrant, expressive, and built to evolve gracefully over time.
