Sensory Description:

The nose opens on an intense weave of ripe blackberry and black cherry, layered with hints of violet, sweet spice, and a gentle wisp of woodsmoke. Dark berry fruit sits at the core, joined by plum skin, subtle licorice, and damp earth, giving the wine both plushness and a grounded, mineral edge. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied and confidently structured, with silky, powder-fine tannins wrapped around juicy, lively acidity that keeps everything lifted. Notes of clove, vanilla bean, and a touch of toasted oak add dimension without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is persistent and harmonious, tapering slowly on dark cherry, spice, and soft, savory earth.

Producer’s Background:

Domaine Isabelle & Philippe Germain is a multigenerational family estate based in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, with holdings that extend into celebrated Côte de Beaune villages such as Santenay, Pommard, Volnay, and Beaune. Founded in the 1960s, the domaine passed to Isabelle and Philippe Germain in the 1990s, who expanded vineyard holdings and grew the domaine’s bottled production. Their farming reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship through HVE level 3 certification and avoidance of herbicides and synthetic pesticides. Philippe now shares viticultural and winemaking responsibilities with his nephew, Maxime Champaud, ensuring continuity in a house style known for purity, finesse, and elegant oak framing.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 60–64°F in a large-bowled Burgundy glass to showcase the interplay of dark fruit, spice, and fine-grained tannins. A gentle 30–45 minute decant allows the 2019 vintage to unfurl, revealing deeper floral and earthy nuance. Pour 5–6 ounces per glass. Ideal pairings include roasted or grilled duck, herb-rubbed lamb, beef tenderloin, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or root vegetables. Aged regional cheeses with washed or bloomy rinds offer another superb accompaniment.
