Select Tier

As the year winds to a close, we invite you to take one final journey—no passport required. December’s Select Tier is a globe-spanning collection that brings together six wines from six distinctive regions, each one chosen to showcase not just where it comes from, but who made it and why it matters.

From Oregon’s misty Willamette Valley, the Sun Break Pinot Noir shows what happens when Burgundian elegance meets Pacific Northwest soul. It’s a wine of quiet intensity—lithe, red-fruited, and savory—crafted with minimal intervention and maximum intent.

Travel further afield and you’ll land in Portugal’s Bairrada, where Filipa Pato & William Wouters are reimagining the native Baga grape. Their 'Dinamica' bottling is electric and energetic, with wild berry, dried herbs, and a whisper of ocean air—an honest expression of place from a team committed to "wines without makeup."

Then there’s Cantine del Notaio’s ‘L’Atto’, a bold southern Italian red from the volcanic slopes of Basilicata. Made from Aglianico, it’s rich and rustic, with dark fruit, smoke, and grit—a winter wine with real backbone.

Also tucked inside: a traditional Rioja with patience and pedigree, a crystalline Mosel Riesling that crackles with energy, and, for those lucky enough, a bottle of Argentine méthode champenoise that sold out before it even had time to chill.

Premium Tier

December’s Premium Tier is a tribute to California craftsmanship in all its nuance and range—with a few welcome detours for those craving a broader horizon. At year’s end, we turn to the producers who embody intention, place, and precision, offering wines that feel deeply personal yet widely resonant.

From sun-soaked slopes to fog-draped valleys, this month’s selection brings together a compelling portrait of California terroir. Outward’s Potrero Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon—sourced from the coastal elevations of San Luis Obispo—is both powerful and restrained, with mountain-berry depth, graphite tension, and a distinct sense of place. It’s a wine for long dinners and quiet reflection.

In the Santa Ynez Valley, Whitcraft Winery continues to push boundaries with three site-specific bottlings that showcase their signature light-handed approach. The 'Clover Creek' Syrah is wild and soulful, balancing savory spice and floral lift, while their Stolpman Vineyard Chenin Blanc is a revelation: bright, textured, and utterly alive.

Piazza Family Wines, meanwhile, brings elegance from the Sta. Rita Hills with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that shimmer with coastal clarity. These are small-lot, thoughtfully made expressions of a region where wind, sun, and sea meet to extraordinary effect.

Rounding out the set, a classic Merlot from Matanzas Creek in Sonoma delivers plush fruit and polished tannins—proof that California's legacy grapes still have stories to tell when placed in the right hands.

Private Sommelier Tier

The final Private Sommelier allocation of the year brings our most bespoke selections yet—each bottle hand-chosen to reflect not just the season, but the personal tastes, cellaring goals, and culinary intentions of every member. Whether you're seeking age-worthy treasures or show-stopping reds to anchor the holiday table, December’s selections span the globe in pursuit of what’s rare, expressive, and essential.

Several members explored the depths of Piedmont, with wines that exemplify the region’s elegance and longevity. Paolo Scavino’s Bricco Ambrogio Barolo offered a single-cru expression with sculpted tannins and lifted aromatics—classic yet accessible. Others opted for the nuanced grace of E. Pira & Figli’s Langhe Nebbiolo, crafted by the legendary Chiara Boschis. It’s a wine that overdelivers in complexity while offering immediate drinking pleasure.

From Australia’s Yarra Valley, the Yering Station ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir was selected by those seeking cool-climate refinement with depth and precision. Layered with red berry, spice, and underbrush, it’s a collectible bottling that speaks to the evolution of New World Pinot on a global stage.

In California, allocations included Ehlers Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley—an organically farmed, estate-grown wine that balances richness with restraint—and for those looking toward Bordeaux, the Château Lassègue Saint-Émilion Grand Cru offered Right Bank structure with modern polish.

And for the collector focused on Italian benchmarks, Sottimano’s Barbaresco ‘Cottà’ was a December highlight—textural, aromatic, and built to evolve beautifully over time.
