Tart red berries, lifted florals, and vivid mineral freshness immediately set the tone for the 2022 Floral Terranes Cabernet Franc, a remarkably delicate and energetic interpretation of the variety produced in an ultra-limited quantity of just 300 liters. By combining direct-pressed fruit with a small portion of lightly macerated Cabernet Franc, the wine achieves an airy, almost translucent personality while preserving the grape’s characteristic savory nuance and subtle peppery edge. It reflects Floral Terranes’ commitment to freshness, restraint, and an inventive approach to expressing Long Island fruit.

Sensory Description:

The nose opens with tart cranberry, red currant, crushed raspberry, and wild herbs layered over soft earth and mineral tones. On the palate, the wine is remarkably light and vibrant, with a texture that recalls the energy and freshness of a white wine while retaining the character of Cabernet Franc. Juicy red fruit is carried by bright acidity and a saline edge, while notes of cran-apple, dried flowers, and subtle soil tones evolve into hints of cracked pepper, fresh herbs, and gentle spice. The finish is brisk, savory, and exceptionally refreshing, lingering with mineral persistence and lifted red fruit.

Producer’s Background:

Founded in 2017 by Long Island natives Erik Longabardi and Benford Lepley, Floral Terranes grew from a shared interest in fruit foraging, fermentation, and the preservation of Long Island’s agricultural landscape. Beginning with ciders made from foraged apples gathered across the island, the project gradually expanded into wine through relationships with local growers and a desire to explore regional fruit from a fresh perspective. Their wines emphasize transparency, balance, and thoughtful cellar work, often favoring lighter, energetic expressions that challenge conventional expectations while remaining deeply connected to site and season.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve lightly chilled at 10 to 13 degrees Celsius in a Burgundy or universal wine glass to highlight the wine’s aromatic freshness and delicate structure. Pair with charcuterie, grilled vegetables, roast chicken, tuna crudo, mushroom dishes, picnic fare, or soft cheeses. Its bright acidity, mineral lift, and featherweight texture also make it an excellent aperitif wine.
