Lime zest, green apple, white flowers, and crushed stone emerge with bright, coastal energy. 2024 Hugo Mendes Pitau White comes from a single vineyard near the western edge of Alenquer, where Atlantic influence helps preserve freshness and aromatic precision. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured exclusively in stainless steel, it reflects Hugo Mendes’ commitment to expressive, minimally manipulated wines that highlight both vineyard character and vintage identity.

Sensory Description:

The nose opens with lime, green apple, white peach, and delicate floral notes, layered with a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, bright citrus and orchard fruit are carried by vibrant acidity and a supple texture that balances freshness with depth. Arinto and Alvarinho contribute tension and mineral persistence, while Fernão Pires adds aromatic lift and Vital brings structure. The finish is long, citrus-driven, and energetic, retaining focus through a lingering saline and stone-framed impression.

Winemaker’s Background:

Hugo Mendes is one of Portugal’s leading advocates for indigenous grape varieties and small-scale, terroir-focused winemaking. Working independently, Mendes seeks out distinctive vineyard sites and lesser-known Portuguese varieties, producing wines that emphasize authenticity, transparency, and regional identity. His approach favors minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing vineyard character and seasonal conditions to remain clearly visible in the finished wine.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in a medium-sized white wine glass to emphasize aromatic detail and freshness. Pair with fresh seafood, crunchy green salads, roast chicken, soft washed-rind cheeses, or simple vegetable-driven dishes. Its bright acidity and citrus-mineral profile also make it an excellent aperitif.
