Sensory Description:

The wine opens with aromas of blackberry, plum, and raspberry, layered with violet, black pepper, and subtle herbal notes. Whole cluster fermentation contributes lifted aromatics and a gentle stem-derived spice, adding complexity and freshness. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a vibrant core of red and dark fruit supported by fine tannins and balanced acidity. Grenache brings roundness and fruit purity, while Syrah adds structure and depth, complemented by savory undertones from Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon. The finish is smooth and persistent, with lingering spice, floral tones, and a refined, earthy nuance.

Winemaker’s Background:

Cartello was founded by Mike Laszlo and Craig Lewis following an abundant harvest at Mila Family Vineyards, where they had worked closely with the estate. Rather than allowing excess fruit to go unused, they created Cartello to highlight the quality of the vineyard at a more accessible level. Rooted in biodynamic farming and careful site selection, the project reflects a commitment to sustainability, precision, and respect for the land, drawing inspiration from the great blends of the Southern Rhône.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 16 to 18°C in a Bordeaux or Rhône-style glass to highlight its aromatic lift and structure. Ideal with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and herb-driven dishes, it also pairs well with lamb, sausages, and Mediterranean cuisine. Decant briefly to allow the wine’s aromatics and texture to fully open.
