Angelo Negro 'Basarin', Barbaresco DOCG, Italy

Expert's Choice Somm Says

Lifted aromas of rose petal, sour cherry, and red plum rise immediately from the glass, layered with anise, dried herbs, and a cool, citrus-tinged freshness that hints at the wine’s structural clarity. From the Basarin cru in Neive, 2021 Angelo Negro Basarin channels Barbaresco through a classical lens, shaped by a balanced growing season that favored aromatic precision, firm tannin development, and measured ripeness. The result is a Nebbiolo of composure and detail, where perfume and structure unfold in deliberate harmony.

Sensory Description:

The bouquet is precise and layered, opening with tart cherry, red currant, and wild strawberry before revealing rose petal, citrus peel, and subtle notes of anise and black pepper. On the palate, the wine is taut and finely structured, with firm yet polished tannins guiding flavors of red plum, dried herbs, and tea leaf. A gentle resinous note and a cool, mentholated freshness emerge toward the finish, which lingers with clarity, spice, and understated elegance.

Producer’s Background:

The Negro family has been rooted in the hills of Piedmont since 1670, establishing one of the region’s enduring multigenerational winegrowing estates. Today, Angelo Negro leads the winery alongside oenologist Gianfranco Cordero, overseeing approximately 65 hectares dedicated primarily to native grape varieties. Their approach balances traditional vinification methods with meticulous vineyard management, emphasizing site expression and long-term continuity. Within this philosophy, individual crus such as Basarin are treated as distinct voices, shaped to reflect their soils, exposures, and inherent structural character rather than stylistic intervention.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 16–18°C in a large-bowled glass, with decanting for approximately one hour recommended to encourage aromatic expansion and textural integration. This Barbaresco pairs naturally with braised meats, game, slow-cooked pork, mushroom-driven dishes, and aged cheeses, excelling alongside savory, umami-rich cuisine that mirrors Nebbiolo’s depth and finesse.
