Naranja Licor de Naranja Orange Liqueur, Mexico pairs a cane-spirit base with sweet-orange oils and distillate, while bitter orange peel gives its citrus character a balancing edge. Distilled in Mexico since 1933 and bottled at 40% ABV, it brings a distinctly Mexican orange liqueur to Margaritas and other cocktails calling for triple sec or orange curaçao.

Product Details:

Sensory Description:

Bright citrus leads, with sweet orange at the center and a more pithy, bitter-orange note adding definition. The palate brings orange flavor and liqueur sweetness together with warming spirit, finishing on lingering citrus and a bittersweet peel character. Its balance of sweet and bitter makes it especially suited to mixing, where the orange note can meet tequila and fresh lime.

Distiller’s Background:

La Madrileña, a Mexican wine and spirits producer founded in 1911, makes and bottles Naranja. The brand dates the liqueur’s Mexican distillation to 1933 and links its story to an Ensenada Margarita anecdote from 1941, though the cocktail’s origin is debated. Controy remains the Mexican-market name; Naranja is used for the U.S. brand following a trademark dispute over Controy. Milestone Brands holds the Naranja brand, while La Madrileña has been part of Bepensa Spirits since Bepensa acquired the company in 2022.

Serving Suggestions:

Temperature: Serve chilled or over ice in a small cordial glass when tasting it on its own; use a rocks glass for cocktails served over ice.

Enjoyment: The producer’s Margarita combines ¾ ounce Naranja, 1½ ounces blanco tequila, and ½ ounce fresh lime juice. Shake with ice, strain over fresh ice, and garnish with a lime wheel; add a salt rim if desired. It can also stand in for triple sec or orange curaçao in other cocktails.

Pairing: Try it with orange flan, dark chocolate, or churros, or use a small measure to bring orange aroma to fruit salad, cake syrup, or a citrus glaze.
