Rising from the rolling hills of Abruzzo, where mountain breezes meet Adriatic sunshine, the 2021 Ciavolich 'Divus' Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a powerful yet refined expression of one of Italy’s most celebrated native grapes. Sourced from the estate’s oldest Montepulciano vines, originally planted in 1987 in Loreto Aprutino, this wine showcases remarkable depth, concentration, and elegance. Rather than relying on sheer size, Divus emphasizes balance and restraint, revealing layers of dark fruit, freshness, and texture that speak clearly of its historic vineyard origins.

Sensory Description:

Divus reveals a beautifully layered aromatic profile of ripe blackberry, black cherry, plum, and dark raspberry, intertwined with hints of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice, cocoa, and subtle earth. The palate is rich and textured yet remarkably poised, delivering concentrated dark fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of licorice, baking spice, and crushed herbs emerge through the long finish, creating an enviable balance of fruit, structure, and freshness that defines this elegant Montepulciano.

Winemaker's Background:

The Ciavolich family has been part of Abruzzo's winemaking history since 1560, with documented wine production dating back to the mid-1800s. Today, siblings Chiara and Gianluca Ciavolich oversee the family estate, farming approximately 50 hectares across two properties in the Pescara province. Dedicated to sustainable viticulture and the preservation of native Abruzzese varieties, they focus on expressing the unique character of Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Cococciola through wines that combine tradition, precision, and a strong sense of place.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in a large red wine glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and layered texture. This wine pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, braised short ribs, wild boar ragù, aged Pecorino, roasted mushrooms, and hearty pasta dishes. Its structure and freshness also make it an excellent companion to rich Italian cuisine and slow-cooked meats.
