Sensory Description:

The nose opens with rich aromas of cooked agave layered alongside citrus zest, butter, olive brine, black pepper, and earthy vegetal complexity. On the palate, vibrant lime and citrus notes intertwine with sweet roasted agave, fresh basil, vanilla, and savory olive tones. The texture is round and deeply expressive, balancing freshness with remarkable depth. Traditional tahona extraction and open-air fermentation contribute a rustic complexity and mineral edge that distinguish the tequila from more modern styles. The finish is long, layered, and warming, carrying lingering pepper, citrus oil, and agave sweetness with exceptional clarity.

Awards & Accolades:

  • Silver Medal: Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition 2022

Distiller’s Background:

Fortaleza traces its lineage back more than 150 years to Don Cenobio Sauza, one of the foundational figures in tequila history and among the first to export tequila internationally. Today, the brand is led by Guillermo Sauza, who revived the family’s historic distillery in 1999 with the mission of preserving traditional tequila-making methods. Using original brick ovens, tahona stone crushing, wooden fermentation vats, and copper stills, Fortaleza produces tequila with a deliberate focus on craftsmanship rather than efficiency. Every bottle reflects a commitment to authenticity, heritage, and the artisanal spirit of old-world tequila production.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve neat at room temperature in a tequila or tasting glass to fully appreciate its layered aromatics and texture. Also exceptional in premium cocktails such as a Tommy’s Margarita or Paloma, where its depth and agave character remain central. Pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, citrus-marinated dishes, fresh cheeses, and traditional Mexican cuisine.
