Yellow apple, fresh pear, meadow herbs, and delicate peppery spice open with bright, effortless energy. 2025 Weingut Leo Alzinger Durnstein Gruner Veltliner Federspiel draws on small vineyard parcels around Dürnstein, where the lower-lying sites reflect the historic influence of Danube-deposited gravel, sand, and sediments. Raised in stainless steel and shaped by the Alzinger family’s precise, restrained approach, it captures the freshness and fine acidity of the 2025 vintage in a particularly transparent expression of Grüner Veltliner.

Sensory Description:

Fresh yellow apple and pear lead the nose, followed by apricot, meadow herbs, and the subtle peppery spice characteristic of Grüner Veltliner. The palate is juicy and finely structured, with vibrant acidity giving the fruit clarity and momentum rather than sharpness. Gentle herbal and mineral notes emerge through the mid-palate, adding dimension to the ripe orchard fruit. Light on its feet yet clearly defined, the wine finishes fresh, elegant, and persistent, with pepper and delicate fruit lingering behind.

Awards & Accolades:

  • Score: Falstaff 91 Points, 2025

Winemaker's Background:

Weingut Alzinger is a family estate in Unterloiben whose modern development began in the 1970s with Leo Alzinger Sr. and his commitment to working the steep vineyards of the Wachau by hand. Today, Katharina Alzinger and Leo Alzinger Jr. continue the estate’s work, focusing on wines that communicate both their vineyard origins and the character of each growing season with clarity and precision. The family farms an important collection of sites around Loiben and Dürnstein, producing Grüner Veltliner and Riesling across the Wachau’s varied terraces and lower-lying vineyards. The 2025 season included a damaging hail event in early June that reduced yields, but the estate reported excellent acidity and strong overall quality. Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner Federspiel represents the lighter, immediately expressive side of the Alzinger style, bringing together fruit from small parcels to emphasize freshness, varietal character, and village identity.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 9 to 11°C in a medium-sized white wine glass to highlight its fresh orchard fruit, peppery spice, and fine herbal detail. Pair with Wiener schnitzel, roast chicken, freshwater fish, seafood, vegetable dishes, light pork preparations, risotto, or fresh and mildly aged cheeses. Its combination of juicy fruit and vibrant acidity also makes it an excellent aperitif.
