2023 Walter Scott Freedom Hill Chardonnay captures the concentration and precision of a distinctive site in Oregon’s Mt. Pisgah, Polk County appellation. Rooted in marine sedimentary Bellpine soils, Freedom Hill’s southeast-facing slopes enjoy protection from the Van Duzer winds, allowing a slightly warmer growing environment than the neighboring Eola-Amity Hills. The resulting Chardonnay combines depth of fruit with a taut mineral character, reflecting Ken Pahlow’s commitment to expressing the individuality of each vineyard.

Sensory Description:

Pale silver-yellow in the glass, this Chardonnay offers lime oil, crushed flint, starfruit and subtle spice. The medium-bodied palate carries concentrated citrus and stone fruit with a composed balance of texture and acidity. White peach and candied lime extend through the finish, while smoky mineral nuances and a saline edge give the wine definition and persistence.

Winemaker's Background:

Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon founded Walter Scott with their retirement savings and a shared belief in the potential of Willamette Valley wine. Pahlow’s experience at St. Innocent, Patricia Green Cellars and Evening Land Vineyards, including his work alongside Dominique Lafon, shaped a disciplined approach to Chardonnay and vineyard expression. Partners Andy and Sue Steinman subsequently joined the business. Named for Pahlow’s grandfather Walter and nephew Scott, the winery honors their adventurous spirit through close grower relationships, attentive farming and deliberate cellar work.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at approximately 10 to 13°C in a generously sized Chardonnay glass, allowing a little time in the glass for the aromas to develop. Pair with seared scallops, grilled halibut, butter-poached lobster or roast chicken with lemon and herbs. Sushi and delicate seafood dishes also complement its citrus intensity and saline finish, while restrained butter or cream sauces echo the wine’s rounded texture.
