Wild strawberry, red currant, and pink grapefruit open with brisk freshness and a stony, savory edge. Wein-Erbhof Stein Rose Trocken, Mosel, Germany 2025 brings Pinot Noir together with approximately 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Ulli Stein’s steep slate vineyards, combining direct pressing and saignée before élevage entirely in stainless steel. Lightness, cut, and mineral definition are central to an estate that has spent decades championing the Mosel’s demanding steep-slope vineyards while pushing beyond the region’s traditional varietal boundaries.

Sensory Description:

Wild strawberry and red currant lead into pink grapefruit and a subtle herbal note, carried by bright acidity and a distinctly stony mineral line. The palate stays light and taut rather than broad, with the red-fruited character of Pinot Noir gaining a little extra structure from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Crisp, dry, and savory through the finish, it retains the freshness and slate-driven tension that define Stein’s approach to the Mosel.

Producer’s Background:

The Stein family has cultivated vines in the Mosel since the 16th century, with Heinrich and Erna Stein establishing the modern Weingut Stein in 1948. Their sons Ulrich and Peter took over in 1982, continuing an independent approach centered on difficult steep vineyards and wines prized for lightness, acidity, and mineral precision. Dr. Ulrich “Ulli” Stein has become particularly associated with preserving the Mosel’s labor-intensive terraced vineyards and with challenging regional convention, including his advocacy for red varieties. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot now form a small but distinctive part of an estate still overwhelmingly associated with Riesling.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in a medium-sized white wine or all-purpose wine glass to emphasize its red-fruited lift, brisk acidity, and mineral edge. Its dry, zippy profile works particularly well as an aperitif or alongside fresh seafood, crunchy salads and greens, fried foods, roast chicken, or other simply prepared white meats.
