Orange peel, peach, floral tones, and black tea rise from the glass with an intriguing combination of fruit and savory depth. 2023 Fio Wines 'Jo Jo' Landwein is a dry, skin-contact Riesling made through a long, gentle maceration before pressing and maturation in traditional Fuder casks. At just 10% alcohol, it brings the structure of an orange wine into FIO’s characteristically light-footed Mosel framework, reflecting a project built around patience, traditional vessels, and an unconventional interpretation of Riesling.

Sensory Description:

Orange and pear peel lead an expressive, evolving nose layered with orange blossom, black tea, rosehip, peach, and savory herbal tones. The palate is notably fine and juicy for a skin-contact wine, with kumquat, grapefruit, and orange peel carried by mild Mosel acidity and a delicate tannic frame. Saline mineral character brings definition through the finish, while the combination of citrus fruit, restrained phenolics, and freshness keeps the wine energetic rather than heavy.

Awards & Accolades:

  • Score: Heiner Lobenberg 94+/100, 2023

Winemaker's Background:

FIO Wines grew from the collaboration between Portuguese winemaker Dirk Niepoort, his son Daniel Niepoort, and Mosel grower Philipp Kettern, bringing together the Niepoort family’s exploratory approach with Kettern’s deep connection to the Mosel. The project centers on Riesling from steep slopes and a deliberately patient cellar philosophy: spontaneous fermentation, long maturation on the lees in old Mosel Fuder, minimal sulfur, no filtration, and time as the principal means of stabilization. Marco Niepoort oversees production, extending the collaboration into another generation of the Niepoort family. Jo Jo takes this philosophy in a more experimental direction through extended skin contact while retaining the lightness and precision central to FIO’s style.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in a generous white wine or universal glass, allowing the wine time and air to reveal its floral, citrus, tea, and herbal dimensions. Its combination of freshness, gentle tannin, and savory mineral character makes it particularly versatile with food. Pair with grilled or roasted vegetables, mushrooms, herb-driven poultry, pork, richer seafood, fermented vegetables, or moderately spiced Asian dishes.
