Dogfish Head Punkin Ale Beer brings a full-bodied brown ale foundation together with real pumpkin meat, brown sugar, and warming spices, creating a seasonal beer layered with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and caramelized sweetness. At 7.0% ABV and 28 IBU, it balances its rich autumnal character with enough bitterness to retain focus, while lingering spice and a cinnamon tingle shape the finish. First brewed by Sam Calagione in 1994 for a recipe contest connected to Delaware's Punkin Chunkin festival, Punkin Ale went on to become Dogfish Head's longest-running seasonal release and remains an expression of the brewery's ingredient-driven, off-centered approach to brewing.

Sensory Description:

Medium amber to copper in appearance, Dogfish Head Punkin Ale Beer opens with cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg layered over the warm aroma of pumpkin and brown sugar. The palate is full-bodied and smoothly textured, carrying pumpkin and caramelized brown sugar through a measured current of baking spice. Cinnamon adds definition without overwhelming the malt-driven richness, while moderate bitterness keeps the beer balanced. The finish is lingering and warmly spiced, with a distinctive cinnamon tingle.

Brewer's Background:

Dogfish Head was founded by Sam and Mariah Calagione and opened its first brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, in June 1995. Its early small-batch brewing system encouraged experimentation with unconventional ingredients and helped establish the brewery's ingredient-driven approach. Punkin Ale actually predates the brewery itself: Sam first brewed the recipe in 1994 for a contest associated with southern Delaware's Punkin Chunkin event, giving the beer both its name and its place at the beginning of the Dogfish Head story. In 2019, Dogfish Head joined The Boston Beer Company, with Sam Calagione continuing his role as founder and brewer and remaining involved in the brand and brewing innovation.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at approximately 45–50°F in a pint glass or tulip to give the beer's pumpkin, brown sugar, and baking-spice aromas room to develop. Its full body and warming spice make it particularly well suited to roasted turkey or duck, lamb, savory stuffing, and sharp cheddar. For dessert, pair it with apple or pumpkin-based pastries, bread pudding, or spiced dumplings, where the beer's cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar character can echo the dish without losing its balance.
