A haze of garnet flickers in the glass as aromas bloom, wild herbs crushed underfoot, black cherries warmed by the sun, and a whisper of dried rose petal carried on a cool mountain breeze. The 2020 Uvaggio is a wine of poise and personality, where elegance meets untamed energy. Each sip reveals another facet of its alpine origin, from spice-laced berries to minerality etched deep into the finish.

Sensory Description:

Aromas of morello cherry, black currant, and blood orange unfurl slowly, layered with dried mint, white pepper, and a delicate floral spice. On the palate, the 2020 Uvaggio delivers a seamless tapestry of crushed red berries, young leather, and wild herbs, framed by firm yet graceful tannins. Hints of rose petal and earthy spice pulse beneath the surface, while a bright acidity lifts the wine into a finish that’s savory, mineral, and deeply resonant.

Winemaker's Background:

Proprietà Sperino is a storied 12-hectare estate nestled in the hills of Lessona, northern Piedmont. The soils here are ancient, born of a supervolcanic explosion and reshaped by the sea and glaciers, imbuing the wines with a signature minerality and finesse. Paolo De Marchi, famed for his work at Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico, inherited the estate from his grandfather, Felice Sperino, a visionary viticulturist and professor. After decades of restoration, Paolo and his son Luca have reestablished Sperino as a benchmark of Alpine Nebbiolo, crafting wines that are both rooted in tradition and Burgundian in elegance.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 61–64 °F (16–18 °C). This expressive red pairs beautifully with grilled duck breast, slow-cooked lamb, or terrines and charcuterie. It also elevates roasted vegetables, black truffle pasta, and firm aged cheeses. The wine’s fresh acidity and spice-laced structure make it especially suited to mushroom risotto and game birds.

With Uvaggio Rosso 2020, Proprietà Sperino offers a vivid snapshot of Piedmont’s lesser-seen side, a layered, mineral-driven red where Nebbiolo’s soul is brightened by Vespolina’s perfume and Croatina’s spice.
